Joshua's Story

Client: Joshua
Program: Youth Services
Dept: Business Services

How long has it been since you worked?

Last worked at a place that installed cabinets.   I moved from Washington over here and started working a few odd jobs.

What struggles were you dealing with?

Homelessness.  Living in my car.  No shelter no access to shelter or essential items I needed.

Which Stanislaus County Workforce Development services helped you the most?

My Youth Advisor always checking on me.   Offering me assistance with clothing, boots and products (personal hygiene).  Taking the time to take me to the YNC and walk the tour with me to see the facilities they had that I could use.  Even offering to buy me lunch or breakfast some days.   It was nice to know I had someone that looked out for me.

What was your experience?

I was always welcome and greeted by everyone in the office.   Ashley never rushed me during our meetings and took time to listen to me and get to know me and not just make sure I was following through with work or school.  She made sure I was ok with my personal life as well. Did I eat? Did I need anything? She would always check in with me and make sure I was ok.    Dustin would talk to me to while I was there.  They always made me feel welcome.   I didn’t know that she would be there but Ashley even showed up to my graduation from VOLT and made sure to come congratulate me and we took a picture together.  I didn’t have anyone there to see me graduate but Ashley showed up for me and for her other clients that graduated that day as well.  She takes the time to show up.  She doesn’t just tell you she is there for you.  She means it and shows up for you.

Would you like to thank anyone?

My youth advisor Ashley, the program manager Dustin.  Everyone from Project YES was helpful.   Also the team at VOLT was great and they along with Ashley teamed up and always made sure I was on track and had the support I needed.  They knew my living situation and always made sure to accommodate me and help me out when I was struggling.

How do you feel about your success now?

I have an awesome job/ career now.   I work full time for a company that offers me great pay and benefits.   My future looks bright.   I really couldn’t have done this with out the help of Project YES and VOLT.   They are truly amazing people that saw potential in me and helped me see my own potential and possibilities.   I owe them a hundred thank you’s!
