Mohammad's Story

Client: Mohammad
Program: Welfare to Work
Department: Business Services

Mohammad immigrated to US only 3 years ago. A successful military translator for the US army in Afghanistan, Mohammad faced the challenges of life in the US immediately after he settled in Stanislaus County. Among the many challenges, finding a job was overwhelming for Mohammad. With no US work experience many of his job applications even for entry level jobs didn’t get him to the next level of recruitment. This was really frustrating for a successful father and the sole bread winner of a family of 5. As Mohammad was referred to SCWD under the WTW program and went through the job readiness program and learned how to update his resume, how to appear for a job interview and many other life skills which are much needed in a different labor market for job seeker.

Very soon after completion of his job readiness workshops, Mohammad was placed at an Auto Repair Shop in downtown Modesto under the ESE Paid WEX program. Mohammad learned enough skills there to be offered the job at the Auto Repair Shop after he successfully completed the ESE program.

At his new job as an auto-mechanic, he earns $30 / hour and still enjoys learning new technical skills and terminologies to help him start his own business of auto repair very soon as part of his immediate plan.

Mohammad stated, “The internship program helped me a lot to stand on my feet and to earn a decent living in a totally different labor market while making a career.”
