Salvador's Story

Client: Salvador Vega

Program: Career Youth Services/DRAIL

Salvador graduated from Turlock High School and obtained an IEP due to a Non-verbal disability. Upon graduation, Salvador didn’t receive transitional outreach services and was left to figure out the real world.  Salvador struggled to obtain employment due to his disability and with his sister’s guidance, he was referred to the program. Salvador has now been enrolled for nearly two years.

Upon starting the program, Salvador was eager to attain employment and stay productive. His first work experience placement was at Mr. Pickles Sandwich Shop as a Sales Promoter/Sign Holder. Although this was employment, Salvador was not content and didn’t want to settle for this position because he knew he was capable of more. Salvador decided to terminate this employment and wanted to explore other options. Salvador’s interest was not just to obtain employment but rather to obtain a desired position where he could provide active and physical labor.

Salvador interviewed for a dishwasher position but unfortunately, he was not hired due to his disability and the “liability” concerns for the position. Months without employment struck Salvador with discouragement and hopelessness but he didn’t give up. Salvador was determined not to let his disability be an obstacle to his success. Salvador was open to exploring employment outside the Turlock area to expand his employment opportunities. A second work experience was offered to Salvador as a custodian for CUSD. At CUSD work experience he met his performance and was offered a position.

However, for Salvador to continue thriving at CUSD he needed additional assistance and employment accommodations. A referral was placed to DRAIL a local agency that provides Youth Disability services. With the collaboration of DRAIL and the program team effort Salvador was provided with the appropriate guidance/coaching and the required tools/materials for his work setting. CUSD also gladly participated in the collaborations and was able to accommodate/modify Salvador’s needs so that he could be successful within his work setting. Salvador continues to work for CUSD as a custodian and enjoys his job.
